3D Systems announced its first venture into the field of medical radiology with the ‘VSP Bolus.’ The VSP Bolus is a custom-printed, biocompatible face accessory that can be individually created to match any patient’s face for the purpose of radiology. Many cancer patients undergo a radiology treatment phase. During these treatments, the patient must wear special equipment that protects their skin from radiation exposure while ensuring the waves enter the desired cells.
One common issue with protective equipment is standardization. In order to effectively provide the most treatment centers with adequate equipment, the devices have been standardized to fit the most amount of patients possible. This means patients may not always have a perfect fit with their headgear, meaning radiation can slip through the gap between the device and the patients’ skin. With the VSP Bolus, radiotherapy wearables can be 3D printed on-demand to perfectly match the shape of any patient’s face.
