Meta announced ‘WhatsApp Communities,’ a new feature intended to aid in the organization of large, collaborative groups. This feature will function similar to hosting a server on the ‘Discord’ application, which allows for a large collective of individuals to participate in a single community across multiple different chatrooms, each with a different purpose.
While Discord servers are often used for entertainment, hobbies, and content communities, the WhatsApp Communities feature is ideal for workplaces, schools, and local organizations. For example, a group of friends could organize a school community with separate chat rooms that each deal with a different aspect of schoolings, such as math help rooms and extra-curricular activities. In addition to this, local organizations, such as charities or dog-walking groups, can use WhatsApp Communities to organize events, mobilize individuals, and foster a sense of belonging.
